What caliber? What length barrel?

Either way, those prices on a real Winchester 94 are really good.

BUT, some lever action rifles compare themselves to Win 94 and are NOT Win 94. So be careful.

But I'd love to hear more about it.

You are talking about a Winchester Model 1894 lever action. It is the rife of the old west. My favorite rifle ever made by far, it is a wonderful firearm with a rich history and tradition and they are very fun to shoot.

Depending on when it was made you should be looking at around 600 dollars for a good one in good condition made before 1970 and around 300-400 for one in decent condition made after that time. The older the more expensive it is going to cost since it is a very highly sought and collectable firearm, in fact the Winchester 1894 holds the record for best-selling high-powered rifle in U.S. history.

You can get them in different calibers, for example I have one in .44 mag that matches my Smith and Wesson .44 mag revolver and they make a nice combo when out in the woods. The standard and original version was a .30 .30.

They are generally pretty accurate about to about 150 yards if you are a good shot, after that the accuracy pretty much drops off. But they are a very well made rifle and certainly worth the investment, any firearms enthusiast should own a Win 1894 for sure.

AE means "angle eject" and allows the use of a receiver-mounted scope. The AEs were among the last models made by Winchester Repeating Arms. All Winchester lever guns are gathering interest as collectors pieces.

For a stronger action and better accuracy many prefer the Marlin model 336 in 30-30 Win.

Andy,
The $300 - $400 range is a fair price. It is probably a Winchester 94 Ranger (20" barrel) that was near the end of production. As has been said earlier here, the older ones are commanding much higher prices. But that takes nothing away from these two you are looking at. As long as they say Winchester on them, they will be good guns that should last you the rest of your life.

The better the overall appearance is, the more they will cost. But if you see one for above $600, it's either an earlier one or very over priced.

Here is a link to Guns America. Most people over price their weapons, but are willing to 'deal' if you are interested. Guns America is strictly a place to list a firearm. They are NOT involved in the transaction at all. That's between buyer and seller. It appears a 30-30 Late Model 94 starts around $500 and goes up.

The Marlin is a good rifle but it isnt an 1894, if you want the real deal, a collectable firearm get the Winchester, if you just want something to hunt and plink with, get the Marlin. You cant go wrong with either one of them but I prefer the real thing myself and own only Winchesters.

Go with the Marlin 336 - it'll run about $400 new and it is built like a brick shit house. Unless you're looking for a collectible - then go with the Winchester.

Re: Winchester 94???

I've got a Winchester 1894 .30.30 (nickle/octagon barrel) that was my great grandfather's...with his saddle holster with his name and the date 1904 carved into it. He shot over 200 deer with that gun...great brush country gun.

My GGF died at 84 while hunting...they found him lying down in the grass with a pleasant look on his face.
